The End of the World Is Coming to Spain, France, Japan and More

We have some very exciting news for our international readers! We are releasing translated versions of The End of the World Is Just the Beginning in a handful of new languages and countries, including: Spain, France, Japan and more!

Looking for another language? The End of the World has been released in a number of different languages, including Korean, Portuguese, Thai, Polish and more…

Here at Zeihan On Geopolitics we select a single charity to sponsor. We have two criteria:

First, we look across the world and use our skill sets to identify where the needs are most acute. Second, we look for an institution with preexisting networks for both materials gathering and aid distribution. That way we know every cent of our donation is not simply going directly to where help is needed most, but our donations serve as a force multiplier for a system already in existence. Then we give what we can.

Today, our chosen charity is a group called Medshare, which provides emergency medical services to communities in need, with a very heavy emphasis on locations facing acute crises. Medshare operates right in the thick of it. Until future notice, every cent we earn from every book we sell in every format through every retailer is going to Medshare’s Ukraine fund.

And then there’s you.

Our newsletters and videologues are not only free, they will always be free. We also will never share your contact information with anyone. All we ask is that if you find one of our releases in any way useful, that you make a donation to Medshare. Over one third of Ukraine’s pre-war population has either been forced from their homes, kidnapped and shipped to Russia, or is trying to survive in occupied lands. This is our way to help who we can. Please, join us.

PRE-ORDER NOW—The Accidental Superpower: Ten Years On

I’m excited to announce the release of my new “10 Years On” edition of The Accidental Superpower. All the original eye-popping assessments of American power and deglobalization, plus a bevy of new text to bring you up to speed on the insanity of the decade since its initial release.

You can pre-order now at the link below!

Near the end of the Second World War, the United States made a bold strategic gambit that rewired the international system. Empires were abolished and replaced by a global arrangement enforced by the U.S. Navy. With all the world’s oceans safe for the first time in history, markets and resources were made available for everyone. Enemies became partners.

We think of this system as normal – it is not. We live in an artificial world on borrowed time.

In The Accidental Superpower, international strategist Peter Zeihan examines how the hard rules of geography are eroding the American commitment to free trade; how much of the planet is aging into a mass retirement that will enervate markets and capital supplies; and how, against all odds, it is the ever-ravenous American economy that – alone among the developed nations – is rapidly approaching energy independence. Combined, these factors are doing nothing less than overturning the global system and ushering in a new (dis)order.

For most, that is a disaster-in-waiting, but not for the Americans. The shale revolution allows Americans to sidestep an increasingly dangerous energy market. Only the United States boasts a youth population large enough to escape the sucking maw of global aging. Most important, geography will matter more than ever in a de-globalizing world, and America’s geography is simply sublime.

The key thing to note here is that the US never did this for themselves (sure, it came with some perks, but there was a greater purpose). At the end of World War II, the US knew something had to be done to stop the Soviets. So, the US created a global trade network to incentivize enough countries to “stand up” against them.

As the Cold War ended, the US ran a cost-benefit analysis, and something wasn’t checking out. The globalized system that once worked in favor of the US alliance network has started to shift in favor of countries outside of that group.

The US Navy still has a global presence, but it is nowhere near the scale it once was. As this presence continues to taper off, what will the repercussions be? The ultimate result will be the collapse of globalization, but the path there is undecided.

If there were a perfectly ironic ending to the globalized world, it would have to be the Russians causing the total collapse of supply chains and bringing this globalization endeavor full circle.

TRANSCIPT

Good morning, everyone. Peter Zeihan here coming to you from Colorado. And the news that you can use today is that my fourth book, The End of the World Is Just the Beginning: Mapping the Collapse of Globalization – is back on the New York Times bestseller list. Specifically, the audio version, which is 17 hours of this.

Anyway, for the month of February, all sales of all books in all formats are going to MedShare, which is a charity that provides medical assistance to communities who lack the ability at the moment to provide it themselves. So, for example, if your neighbor is Russia and it’s throwing missiles into your electrical grid and the power goes out your hospital, MedShare helps with diesel and generators and medical equipment, all that. So buy a book and all the proceeds will be going to Medicare. Or you can just go directly to the link at the end of this email. And that goes directly to the Ukraine fund.

That’s it for me. Thanks for all the support and looking forward to doing more of these over the course of the next couple of months. Take care.

A Conversation with Sam Harris and Ian Bremmer

I recently had the pleasure of joining Eurasia Group founder Ian Bremmer on Sam Harris’ podcast, Making Sense. We discussed my new book The End of the World is Just the Beginning and had a wide-ranging conversation on a variety of issues from demography and population collapse to the war in Ukraine, the differing fates of China and the United States, and other topics I think my subscribers would enjoy.

More info on how to listen below.

INTERNATIONAL VENDORS FOR PETER’S NEW BOOK: THE END OF THE WORLD IS JUST THE BEGINNING

A Welcome, a Reintroduction, and an Update on Ukraine

Many, many thanks to those of you who have helped make my new book, The End of the World is Just the Beginning, a New York Times best seller. As is typical with authors who make it onto the list, there is a sort of mad dash for their previous works.

Please allow me to give a brief description of my first three books–more info on them here–if for no other reason than the proceeds from the sales of these titles are being donated to the Afya Foundation (more info on them below). The Afya Foundation is the charity we’ve selected to help and highlight as they continue to deliver medical supplies to Ukrainians in need following Russia’s invasion of that country.

Which brings us to the current situation in Ukraine. While the Ukrainian military has performed beyond most people’s wildest expectations, the Russians have dug themselves in for the long haul. The humanitarian and geopolitical impacts have already been considerable and they show no signs of abating anytime soon.

The End of Nations At the End of the World

The demographic pyramids below are from my new book, The End of the World is Just the Beginning: Mapping the Collapse of Civilization. I discuss global demographic trends, the impacts of societal aging and the future of, well, everything

What we have here are two population pyramids, telling two very different stories of ostensibly the same country. The data is arranged numerically by sex, with simple mortality causing the numbers to shape up like a pyramid. At least, the chart looks like a pyramid in societies with a high enough fertility rate to offset deaths due to old age.

Take a look (and a read). Italy is most assuredly not alone in its rapid demographic decay.

Finally, a reminder. You can access all of the graphics from the book in full color (and zoomable size) on my website. Just click here to access the graphics from The End of the World is Just the Beginning

Boomers At the End of the World

The Boomers are the largest generation the world has ever seen. And they’re getting ready to enter retirement en masse. This is going to have incredible impacts on global labor, capital and development. If you enjoy this video, I cover the topic of demographics and the future of, well, everything in depth in my new book The End of the World is Just the Beginning, available everywhere–including your local bookstore.

First things first: labor. As the largest–and longest lasting–component of the American and global labor force in history, the Boomers have had an outsized impact on everything. On wages. On hiring. On how subsequent generations–Gen X and the Millennials–fit into the labor market. Or don’t.

And now they’re retiring. While this leaves members of Gen X as the most skilled labor cadre in the United States, our numbers can’t replace the Boomers. And the Millennials lack the decades of skill to replace Boomer workers.

There’s also the stark reality of capital. Boomers have been earning and investing those earnings for decades. Boomer savings and their general high apetite for risk have seen a flood of capital spread into industries and environments across the world as the price of capital plummeted and its availability increased.

Not anymore. Boomers, like all retirees, favor safe, stable, long-term investments. As they switch from adding to their savings and investment accounts and instead transition to drawing from them in retirement, the Boomers are going to cause as big of a splash leaving the labor market as they did when they jumped in in the 80s..
